Rome

After arrival in Rome you'll check into deluxe four-star accommodations in the center of Rome's historic district. An orientation walk will show you Rome's most beautiful monuments-the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, and Piazza Navona-and give you an introduction to life and leisure in the Eternal City.

Rome is a city built layer-upon-layer and we'll begin to disentangle these with a visit to the ancient city center that takes in the Forum Romanum and the Colosseum. We'll also visit Piazza del Campidoglio, Michelangelo's masterpiece of urban planning.

But Rome is much more than an ancient city-it's an Eternal one-so our tour will also take in the masterpieces of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. We'll see paintings by the likes of Raphael and Caravaggio and architecture designed by Bramante, Borromini, and Bernini. And a visit to the stunning Galleria Borghese will give you a chance to see an unparalleled collection of Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces in their original context.

Our last full day in Rome will take us to the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica. We'll marvel at the vast collections in the Vatican, looking in particular at the rooms painted by Raphael for Pope Julius II and the Sistine Chapel ceiling painted by Michelangelo, and we'll admire St. Peter's, a church unmatched in size and splendor.

Bay of Naples

From Rome, you will take the fast train down to the Bay of Naples where your tour will begin with a visit to the National Archaeological Museum in Naples to view some of the treasures removed from the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as the exquisite Farnese collection of statuary which decorated the Baths of Caracalla in Rome and to Pompeii for a visit to the ruins of the Roman market town buried under pumice stones and ash during the eruption of 79 AD. This is a unique opportunity to experience the Roman lifestyle of the 1st century AD.

Afterward, jet over to the glamorous Island of Capri for four nights in paradise to discover the treasures of the island that so enchanted the emperor Tiberius that he moved the reign of the Roman Empire to the Bay of Naples and called Capri home. We will have delightful walks to visit Villa Jovis, the most important of the 12 imperial villas begun by Augustus and completed by Tiberius, to the chapel of Cetrella, and, of course, through Capri, the playground of today's jet setters!

No trip to Capri would be complete without a private boat tour around the dramatic landscape of the enchanted island! We'll swim, visit caverns and grottoes, and be lulled by the song of the sirens!

Our tour includes the incredible Amalfi Coast drive and a visit to Amalfi, the first southern Maritime Republic in Italy, before continuing on to view the Doric temples at Paestum.

Your last afternoon will be free to relax on one of Capri's many famous beaches or poolside in our hotel. Depart at your leisure from Sorrento.
