Our third and most challenging walk is to Villa Jovis, once
home to the Emperor Tiberius, and the greatest of the 12 Roman
villas he built on the island. In ancient times,Tiberius ruled
the greatest empire from this villa, and, according to dark
legends, he remains among the ruins of Villa Jovis.
The central square of the villa is comprised of the Imperial
Quarters, the Servants Quarters, the Baths and the Great Hall.
On the right of the entrance is the rock known as Tiberius'
Leap from which, according to historians Suetonius and Tacitus,
Tiberius' tortured victims were thrown to their deaths.
After our visit to Villa Jovis, we will continue down to the
Natural Arch, which once was the opening of a cavern. The cavern
itself has eroded with time but the opening remains!
